If you've always wanted to shred in the Neoclassical style,
but never knew how get
your fingers 'up to speed'...

If you're anything like me, you've watched the great shredders and have been knocked over by the flurry of notes, runs, arpeggios, and screaming solos.

If you've tried to learn one of their solos from TAB, you know the confusion and despair that comes when you realize how difficult it is to build up your speed, make correct finger choices, and get your right hand picking like a virtuoso.

Learning from TAB is fine for most songs,
until it comes to shred guitar.

Here's why:

Most "shred TAB" online is incorrectly written by people who don't know how to play the solos that they're transcribing.

This is because the guitar is a non-linear instrument.

Unlike other instruments, the fretboard allows you to play most things half a dozen ways (most of which are wrong).

With most 'regular speed' music on the top 100 list, the average guitarist can fudge their way through the technical bits and get away with poor finger choice and average picking without too much trouble.

This is because most pop music melodies never gets above 100-150 'notes per minute' (usually a mix of 1/4 and 1/8th notes at 120-135bpm).

When it comes to shred guitar, you're cranking the speed up to 600-800 notes per minute (1/16th notes at 150-190bpm).

So if you're strumming out wonderwall for the 183rd time, feel free to use whatever free TAB you can find online.

However, if you're looking to reach 'max speed guitar playing', poorly-written TAB is going to create more problems than they solve - because max-speed playing requires accurate finger-choice, efficient picking technique, and specialized practice methods that TAB can never deliver.

Novice shredders often dig themselves into a practice-hole by downloading the TAB to their favorite shred solos, and taking a scattershot approach to their finger choice & picking technique.

This is why you hear guitarists ripping through small sections of solos, and then tripping over their own fingers when they get to a 'hard bit'.

This is where Swedish Shred Secrets comes in.

I've been through the same struggle as you.

I discovered Neoclassical Shred when I was around 16 years old.

I found the style playing breathtaking. It was like watching a person fly like a superhero, while making it look effortless. I decided I wanted to feel that way, so like many, I sat down to tackle some solos and licks. The Neoclassical style was all about agile riffs, mythical keyboards, pounding double kick drums and of course, blistering, soaring solos.

When learning the riffs, I found it doable. But when I got to the solo, it was like climbing a cliff face with nothing but my bare hands. I couldn’t even get CLOSE.

I gave in to the belief that those soaring runs, arpeggios and pedal tone licks were just unobtainable for a normal Joe like me.

I felt so humbled and incompetent. All my usual tricks for gaining speed failed dismally. Metronome practise, repetition, playing it slow, nothing made a dent.

That was in 2002.

In 2007 I started teaching guitar, while studying for my Bachelor of Music. I learned to teach, and through this, I learned many techniques increase my own speed, such as spaced repetition, tempo elasticity and efficiency of motion. These helped me to play way faster, but every few years I’d return to those iconic Neoclassical solos and fail just as badly as the first time. Something was still missing.

This groundhog day experience continued. Every time I tried and got my hopes up, I failed. I believed this style was so difficult that I could never even get close.

And then in 2015, something happened. The Maestro of Neoclassical Shred came to my home town of Hobart, Tasmania. We NEVER get players like this coming to our small island state. This was a BIG DEAL.

So I went and watched the performance. The stage was pitch black, and after a blazing cadenza from a wall of Marshalls, those epic keyboard chords seared through the fog like a beam of light. They played my favorite song!

I was astounded, I was going to get to see how those iconic solos were played up close. I stood no more than 5 meters away.

As the song passed the 2nd chorus, I started to feel nervous for the Swedish Shredder! He was about to get to a piece of music that I couldn't touch, and I figured it would be hard for him too. Boy was I wrong.

He just stood there in the smoke, lights & deafening sounds, and effortlessly ANNIHILATED it. I was blown away. His picking hand looked so efficient, I almost didn't believe what I was seeing.

After that gig, I left, half blind and deaf from the intensity of it all, with a seed planted in the back of my mind: he is doing something different in that solo. I don't know what it is, but one day I'll figure it out. It took 3 years, but...

...in 2018, it FINALLY clicked.

I realised that the man with the Ferrari licks uses ECONOMY picking. This had always seemed like a dark art to me, and one that was at odds with my default mode of alternate picking. My militant resolve to stick with alternate picking had been useful, but it was time to learn to swim with the current, not against it.

Not long after, it happened. I sat down to play those Neoclassical licks and solos, and it worked. I could do it. It was like Christmas. Now I was free to fly around like Iron Man whenever I wanted.

Suddenly people began to notice too. Even industry leading players were saying things like “your right hand is monstrous Tom!”. But I didn’t feel like I was doing anything special. All I had done is said yes to economy picking, and stuck with it.

Now, years later, my goal is purely to widen the road to Valhalla, to make it easy & straightforward for any serious guitarist to learn what I have learned. For you to have that 'Christmas Morning' feeling when you sit down to melt faces in A Harmonic Minor.

So why I created Swedish Shred Secrets. This is everything I know about how to play Neoclassical Shred, and not only the licks, but the philosophy and the habits. The mindset. Because when you understand how all these phrases are constructed, it all makes perfect sense. Rather than a flurry of random notes, you'll see lego-brick style chunks that can be cleverly used to build into a face-melting run.

This course is not only the result of my obsessive deep dive into Neoclassical Shred, but also of teaching guitar to 50 one-on-one students per week for 17 years. So not only have I learned this style for myself, but I've also learned the most effective ways to teach it.
