I remember the moment I heard Crazy Train for the first time as a 16 year old. That impossible tone. The attitude. The licks. No-one else sounded like that.

It all just hooked me immediately. I knew I HAD to learn it, right then and there.

So there I sat at my dad’s computer, and as was the fashion in 2002, I hit up Ultimate Guitar for the tabs. There would usually be a few options, so I chose one that looked the least-worst and got to work.

While I could flub my way through the riffs semi-successfully (turns out I played them wrong for a LONG TIME), the solo left me feeling mad. Not only could I not do it, but I was convinced that the Tab was wrong.

That glorious ascending monstrosity of a run (you know the one) that finishes the solo was written as straight 16th notes. Red flag.

Even if the rhythm was written correctly, I knew there must have been something else going on with the note choice and the shapes. It wasn’t a nice neat minor scale, there was more to it. But I had no idea what.

I was angry and disillusioned, because it didn’t fit into my ‘cookie-cutter’ style of learning solos that had worked so well for me up to that point. So I avoided playing the solo for decades.

It was thrown in the ‘too hard’ pile, and left to rot in the back of my brain, occasionally coming up to taunt me whenever one of my guitar students wanted to learn it.

“Don’t worry about that run at the end…” I’d say, “…it’s too hard, so just simplify it and hope no-one notices”.

...I realised it’s actually fairly straightforward. I took my first step to really understanding Randy’s mindset around these seemingly impossible phrases.

I started learning more RR solos, like Mr Crowley, I Don’t Know, Revelation (Mother Earth), Goodbye to Romance and Over the Mountain.

In each one of these, I realised that there were more hidden patterns to discover and overcome. These fragments made no sense in isolation.

BUT… they emerged with clarity once I took a step back and applied some Randy common-sense.

Now, Randy was an artist. He stretched his solos to the edge of his technical ability to achieve his musical peaks. He gave it everything, and the final result speaks for itself.

He didn’t write this stuff to be taught to guitar students. He wrote it to change the world.

He was far from a conventional player. That why it’s so hard for guitarists to learn his licks authentically.

That’s why there’s a vast sea of incorrect YouTube covers.

That’s where Shred Like Randy comes in.

I see it as my job personally to take these patterns and concepts that Randy’s fingers brought to life, and pass them on to you in a way that makes sense.

In my 2 decades of teaching, I’ve learned that the Tab alone is simply not enough to nail the solo.

Introduction Videos:
Here we'll be looking at how to setup your guitar for maximum speed, as well Randy's Scale Shapes, Picking Hand, and how to recreate his legendary 'Chip Pan' tone at home.

Lesson Videos: 
This is where I'll break down techniques, concepts and licks, guiding you through the shapes and patterns behind Randy's ferocious playing.

Drill Videos: 
I'll play along with you as we practice these phrases over an intuitive range of tempos both to ingrain them into your muscle memory, and to get them blazing at lightspeed.

Improv Videos:
This is where we take the lick, and learn to incorporate it into your improvising over a range of keys. By the time you're shredding the phrase all over the neck, playing it in a song will be a piece of cake.

Etudes:
I created these bespoke mini-songs for you to shred through a combination of the RR licks & concepts you've just learned. You'll be embedding healthy muscle memory while learning to apply these phrases in a musical context.
